Facebook Video Download Not Working? Causes and Fixes

Most failed Facebook downloads come down to the video's privacy setting or the link you copied. Here is how to tell which one, and what to do about it.

Updated

You paste a Facebook link into a downloader and get an error, a blank result or a file that won't play. Facebook videos sit behind privacy settings and several link formats, and most failures come from one of those two. Work through the causes below in order. The first two cover most cases.

1. The video isn't public

ICANDL, like any downloader that doesn't log in to your account, can only read videos anyone can watch. Videos shared with friends only, posts in private groups and stories limited to certain people are out of reach.

To check, open the link in a private or incognito browser window where you aren't logged in to Facebook. If Facebook asks you to log in or says the content isn't available, the video isn't public. The only fix is to ask the person who posted it to send you the file.

2. The link isn't a video link

Facebook links can point to a profile, a page, a photo, a whole post or a single video. A post with several items or a link to someone's profile won't return a video. Open the video so it plays on its own, then tap Share and choose Copy link. For Reels, copy the link from the Reel itself.

3. The video was deleted or edited

If the owner removed the video, changed its privacy or deleted the post, the old link stops working. A video that plays in your Saved list may already be gone from Facebook's public view.

4. The browser blocked the download

Sometimes ICANDL shows the buttons, but nothing saves when you tap one. Look for a blocked download notice in the address bar and allow it. On iPhone, use Safari instead of the browser inside the Facebook app, which often can't save files.

5. Your phone is out of space

Long videos in HD can be several hundred megabytes. If the download stops partway or the file won't open, free up storage and try again.

6. The quality is lower than expected

This isn't a failure, but it looks like one. ICANDL saves the highest quality Facebook offers for the video, up to 4K. If the video was uploaded at 480p, the download is 480p.

Try it again

Once you have a public video and the right link, paste it into the Facebook video downloader and choose "Download Video + Audio". For the sound only, use the Facebook audio downloader.

ICANDL doesn't store the files it processes. Keep downloaded videos for personal use unless the owner gives permission.

How to Fix a Facebook Video That Won't Download

Checks to run when a Facebook video won't download

1
Open the link in a private browser window without logging in. If it doesn't play, it can't be downloaded.
2
Use Share and Copy link on the video itself, not on the profile or a photo post.
3
Open the ICANDL Facebook downloader, paste the new link and tap Download.
4
If nothing saves, allow downloads in your browser and make sure your device has free storage.
