Where Do Downloaded Videos Go on iPhone and Android?

A downloaded video isn't lost. On iPhone it is in the Files app, and on Android it is in the Downloads folder. Here is how to find it and move it to your gallery.

Updated

You tap a download button, the progress bar fills, and then the video is nowhere in your gallery. This happens on both iPhone and Android. Browsers save files to a downloads folder, and the photo app doesn't always look there. Here is where each system puts the file and how to move it.

iPhone and iPad

Safari saves every download to the Files app, not to Photos.

To find it:

  1. In Safari, tap the download arrow that appears in the address bar after a download. It lists recent files. Tap one to open it.
  2. Or open the Files app, tap Browse, and open Downloads. Safari uses the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive or the one under On My iPhone, depending on your settings.

To put the video in Photos, open it in Files, tap Share and choose Save Video. For an image, the option is Save Image.

To change the folder Safari uses, go to Settings, Apps, Safari, Downloads. Choosing On My iPhone keeps files on the device, which is faster when you download large videos and saves iCloud space. On older iOS versions the path is Settings, Safari, Downloads.

Chrome on iPhone works a little differently. It may show its own download list and offer Open in or Save to Files. Saving to Files and then using Save Video gets the clip into Photos.

Android

Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox and most other browsers save to the Downloads folder on internal storage.

  • Chrome: tap the three dots, then Downloads, to see recent files.
  • Files by Google: Browse, then Downloads.
  • Samsung My Files: Downloads, or Internal storage then Download.

Gallery apps read the same folder. In Samsung Gallery, open Albums and look for Download. In Google Photos, open Library (or Collections) and find Download under Photos on device. If a new album is hidden, Google Photos may ask whether to show it.

Still missing?

Check that the download actually finished. A notification that stopped partway usually means low storage. Search your file manager for the file name, or sort Downloads by date. On iPhone, an MP3 you saved as audio will be in Files and won't appear in Photos at all.

Downloads from ICANDL

ICANDL hands the file to your browser, so it follows the rules above. Videos saved with "Download Video + Audio", photos from "Download Original Photo" and MP3s from "Download Audio Only" all start in the browser's download folder.
