Facebook Video Downloaded Without Sound? Causes and Fixes

Facebook stores many videos as a silent picture stream plus a separate audio stream. A downloader that saves only the picture gives you a mute file. Here is how to tell which problem you have and fix it.

Updated

You saved a Facebook video, pressed play and heard nothing. Before you try five other downloaders, find out which of four causes you're dealing with. Three of them have a quick fix. The fourth means the sound is gone for everyone.

Cause 1: the tool saved only the picture

Facebook delivers many videos the way streaming services do: one stream carries the picture, another carries the sound, and the player joins them while you watch. Some downloaders pick the best picture stream and stop there. The result is a sharp MP4 with no audio track at all, and no player setting can fix it.

To get both parts, paste the link into the Facebook downloader and choose "Download Video + Audio". That button returns the video with picture and sound in one file.

Cause 2: the silent option was picked

ICANDL shows several buttons for each video:

  • "Download Video + Audio" is the full video with sound.
  • "Download Video Only" removes the sound on purpose, for people who want to add their own.
  • "Download Audio Only (MP3)" keeps only the sound.

If you tapped "Video Only", go back and choose "Video + Audio".

Cause 3: Facebook muted the video

Play the video on Facebook with the volume up. If it's silent there or shows a notice that the audio was removed, the sound was taken down, usually because of a music rights claim. Downloaders get the same silent stream Facebook shows you. There is nothing left to recover.

Cause 4: the phone or player

Check the simple things before downloading again:

  1. Turn up the media volume. Phones keep ringtone and media volume separate.
  2. On iPhone, check the silent switch or Action button and tap the speaker icon in Photos.
  3. Open the file in another player such as VLC. Some gallery previews start muted.

Only need the sound?

If the audio is what you're after, the Facebook audio downloader saves it as an MP3 or WAV. The guide on downloading audio from a Facebook Reel or video walks through it.

Other download problems

Errors such as "video not found" or links that won't load are a different issue, usually privacy settings or a wrong link. See Facebook video download not working. The same silent-file problem on Instagram is covered in downloaded Instagram video has no sound.

ICANDL works with public videos only and doesn't store the files it processes.
